Marvel Universe: Juggernaut

I toyed with the idea of dropping in another movieverse custom this week to try and bring back the viewer spikes from the Guardians of the Galaxy customs, but I’m not sure the two I still have lined up (from different films, mind) would get the same response. Plus, hey, there’s still a lot of other customs to show you!

So here’s a personal favorite — less because the character is beloved and more because this costume and color scheme falls right in line with my preference for alternate costumes, especially little-used ones. I’ve always loved this costume for Juggernaut, originally because the gray and yellow look good together but even more when it got used less and less.

I remember being fairly intrigued when they announced in 2005 that there would be a Wal-Mart exclusive set of figures for the Toy Biz Marvel Legends line, which at the time was super-hot. I didn’t collect the scale, but my brother did, and he was pretty psyched for it too; for one reason or another the exclusive set got borked and most of the figures found their way to regular waves instead (or were already done in other waves) — except Juggernaut himself. I’m not sure why I make sure that this anecdote always comes up whenever this look is being talked about, but I do. Maybe because it’s the most interesting thing I know about the costume?

In any event, the custom itself was also great fun. This had always been on the list thanks to my personal fondness for the color scheme (and probably because in the back of my mind this would be… “vindication” for the unreleased Legends one, I guess), and all it took was getting a reasonably-priced Juggernaut in a lot, which eventually happened. No easy feat, though, in a country with such a ridiculous-at-times collector culture. Minimal disassembly — just took the legs off, as I didn’t think taking the arms off was necessary.

Laid down a couple of coats of white on the lower torso and boots, to prime for the white, and did up a custom gray mix for the rest of him. It was a bit tricky to have to avoid the fleshtone on the arms, and I think I may have nicked them here and there with the gray, but nothing too noticeable. After this I went back to the lower torso and legs with some more white, and then with a few coats of golden yellow.

The yellow turned out to be some of the nicest yellow painting I’d done — mind, I’ve done some pretty crappy yellow painting, with the undercoat or the base color showing through because yellow is a pain in the ass. After the whole  thing was put together, toothpicked some silver onto the rivets on the helmet and gave the gray bits some silver drybrushing and black drybrushing (others would have gone with a wash, but I didn’t want him to look dirty, just scuffed.) And boom, it’s the Juggernaut, bitch. (obligatory.)
